How To Build A Shiplap Ceiling
**This post contains sponsored content but all opinions are our own.
We have been working on renovating our guest bathroom and we really wanted something in the room that would add warmth and would have a wow factor. That’s when we were inspired by Angela Rose Home to do a wood ceiling! We were excited to get started!
First up, we went to Lowe’s to get the goods! We decided on using 8’ unfinished pine shiplap. We used pine for the ceiling because it stands up great to moisture and resists shrinking, swelling, and warping. Since the wood ceiling is in our guest bathroom it won’t be used that often, plus it has proper ventilation. We wanted the wood to be unfinished because we used the same stain we used throughout the house. The stain we used is Woodwright Easy Wipe Stain in OCS119 Cappuccino.
This stain color is so gorgeous! Our cabinet builder used it and we wanted to carry it through our home to match the rest of the stained wood. It is a special-order stain and is kind of expensive but I would definitely recommend it!
We took all of the planks out to our new workshop to stain them. We like using staining pads because it gives the wood a nice even finish. We didn’t sand them beforehand because they are already pretty smooth but also, they are going on the ceiling so it doesn’t really matter. Once the stain was all dried, we added a top coat just to seal everything.
Shiplap Ceiling Installation
Finally time for the installation! We measured the width of the bathroom and started laying the boards right inside the door. We used our Ryobi Table Saw & our Ryobi Miter Saw to get the perfect cuts. Then we went in with our Ryobi 18-Gauge Brad Nailer to attach the planks to the ceiling. We nailed the boards in twice at each joist, once in the lip of the board and once on the other side to make sure everything was secure.
Ryan used our Ryobi Jigsaw to cut out the hole for the ceiling vent and the around the lights. We seriously love this tool, it’s so easy to use and the cuts are so smooth!
Overall, installing the wood planks was pretty smooth sailing, we did run into one place where we had to do lots of measuring. Both sides of the plank needed to be different because of the wall, and neither side of the wall was straight. This is just something that we ran into and had to work around but luckily Ryan figured it all out and it was a breeze after that!
While we were working on this project, we both agreed that it was so nice to finally work in our workshop!
Once the planks were all hung, I headed to Lowes to get a replacement grille for the vent. Just to clarify, this is not an actual vent, just a cover. But a pretty sweet one! It has a LED light and Bluetooth speaker. It’s not compatible with every fan, you would have to make sure it would work for you. However, I do love that there is no electrical or wiring needed for this upgrade - it’s plug-and-play!
We really cannot believe how much of a difference the wood plank ceiling makes. Let’s take a moment to look at the before & after shots!
It’s just SO GOOD!! It’s so crazy how it makes such a huge impact - these details are muahhh! Chefs kiss!! This is one of our favorite projects to date & the best part is, it only took 2 evenings! We are so excited about installing the tile behind the vanity and the shower and then adding the final touches!
